Bangladesh Greenlights Padma Barrage Project After 60 Years; Construction to Begin in 2026

Bangladesh has approved the long-delayed Padma Barrage project, with the Planning Commission clearing a phased execution plan. The first phase, costing Tk34,608 crore, will use domestic funding, while foreign loans may be sought later. Construction is projected from March 2026 to June 2033, aiming to regulate the Padma River, generate 113 MW of hydropower, and support major facilities including the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant.

After over six decades of debate, Bangladesh is set to move forward with the Padma Barrage. The Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) selected Pangsha in Rajbari district as the site, with a proposed structure spanning 2.1 km and including 78 spillway gates, 18 undersluice gates, fish passes, a navigation lock, and a railway bridge.

The phased construction, beginning with a Tk34,608 crore first phase, will focus on river flow regulation, water distribution, and hydropower generation, while supporting critical infrastructure like the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant. The project addresses reduced river flow linked to India’s Farakka Barrage.
