Former India captain Mohammed Azharuddin has defended the BCCI’s handling of the controversy surrounding Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman and his participation in IPL 2026. The issue emerged after political leaders raised objections to Rahman’s inclusion, citing ongoing reports of violence against Hindus in Bangladesh.
In response, the BCCI instructed Kolkata Knight Riders to release the left-arm fast bowler from their squad. Rahman had been signed for Rs 9 crore during the IPL mini-auction in December. The board’s decision received support from many, amid growing concerns over the safety of players from the neighbouring country.
Azharuddin said the cricket board could not be faulted for its decision, noting that while sports ideally remain separate from politics, the situation in Bangladesh was troubling. He added that the move was likely made after consultations with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs, indicating careful consideration.
Rahman later commented briefly on his release, saying there was little he could do once a player is dropped.
The controversy has had wider implications. Following the incident, Bangladesh’s interim government has reportedly asked the Bangladesh Cricket Board to formally request the ICC to move the venue of Bangladesh’s matches in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 away from India.
