David Warner produced a vintage T20 masterclass in the Big Bash League, hammering an unbeaten 130 off 65 balls to guide Sydney Thunder to a commanding 205/4 against Hobart Hurricanes on Saturday.
The knock marked Warner’s ninth T20 century, pushing him past Rohit Sharma (eight hundreds) and drawing him level with Virat Kohli and South Africa’s Rilee Rossouw on the all-time T20 centuries list. It was also Warner’s highest score of the ongoing BBL season and his first T20 hundred in six years, underlining a stunning return to peak form.
Sydney Thunder endured early drama as they slipped to 2 for 0 after losing two wickets off the first two balls, leaving Warner stranded at the non-striker’s end. Once settled, the left-hander took complete control, pacing his innings before unleashing a devastating late assault that yielded 50 runs from his final 15 deliveries.
Warner finished with 11 fours and nine sixes, registering the highest individual score in Thunder’s BBL history. He found useful support from Sam Billings (20), Nic Maddinson (30, retired hurt), and Daniel Sams, who added a late cameo.
Despite disciplined spells from Will Prestwidge (2/19) and Rishad Hossain (4/29), the Hurricanes struggled to contain Warner’s onslaught.
The innings provided a massive morale boost for the Thunder, who entered the contest at the bottom of the table, and further cemented Warner’s status as one of the most prolific and destructive batters in T20 cricket history.
