Mohan G Explains Why He Requested Theri Re-release Delay but Not Ajith’s Mankatha

Ahead of Draupathi 2’s January 23 release, director Mohan G clarified why he approached Kalaipuli S Thanu to postpone Theri’s re-release but did not make a similar request to Sun Pictures for Mankatha.

Director Mohan G is preparing for the theatrical release of his upcoming filmDraupathi 2, which is set to arrive in cinemas on January 23. The film stars Richard Rishi in the lead role, along with Rakshana Induchoodan, Natty Nataraj and Chirag Jani, and is produced by Sola Shakkaravarthi under the Netaji Productions banner.

As the release date nears, Mohan G recently thanked veteran producer Kalaipuli S Thanu for agreeing to postpone the re-release of Vijay’sTheri. The decision came after Mohan G personally explained that a clash with multiple big-hero films would significantly reduce theatre availability forDraupathi 2.

However, the move sparked questions on social media about why the director did not approach Sun Pictures, which is re-releasing Ajith Kumar’sMankathaon the same date. Addressing these queries in an interview, Mohan G said the concern was valid and clarified the sequence of events that led to the situation.

According to the director, Sun Pictures had announcedMankatha’s January 23 re-release well in advance, at a time whenDraupathi 2was still slated for January 30. The film’s release date was later shifted to the Pongal window before finally being locked for January 23, long afterMankatha’s plans were already public.

Mohan G explained that when he decided to move away from the crowded Pongal period, Kalaipuli S Thanu voluntarily agreed to rescheduleTheriafter understanding the challenges faced by smaller films competing with tier-one star releases. He described Thanu as highly approachable and empathetic, noting that the producer related to the situation from his own early career experiences.

Draupathi 2also features Vela Ramamoorthy, Ganesh Gourang, Y Gee Mahendran, Barani, Deviyani Sharma, Divi, Saravanan Subbiah and Jayavel in supporting roles. The film’s music is composed by Ghibran, with cinematography by Philip R Sundar and editing by Devaraj. Action sequences are choreographed by Action Santosh, while Kamalnathan serves as art director.
