In a major cyber fraud case, a woman from the Old Town area of Bhubaneswar fell victim to a ‘digital arrest’ scam and lost ₹30 lakh. The fraudsters contacted her over the phone, impersonating officials from Mumbai’s Colaba Police Station, and falsely claimed that an arrest warrant had been issued against her in a serious criminal case.
Using intimidating language and creating panic, the scammers pressured the woman into transferring money to multiple bank accounts. She was also warned not to contact her family or local authorities. After realising the fraud, the woman filed a complaint at the Cyber Police Station in Bhubaneswar.
Police traced the money trail and arrested one accused, G. Chiranjeevi of Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, who is believed to be part of an interstate cybercrime syndicate. Further investigation is underway to identify other suspects, track bank accounts, and recover the cheated amount. Police have urged citizens to stay alert and verify any legal threats with local authorities.
