A massive fire erupted at a maize processing factory located at K.M. Bhali Sahi under the R. Udayagiri police station limits in Gajapati district late on Tuesday night, resulting in extensive damage to machinery and raw materials. The losses are estimated to be worth several lakhs of rupees.
According to sources, the fire broke out suddenly inside the factory premises due to reasons yet to be ascertained. The flames spread rapidly, engulfing the entire unit within minutes and reducing costly processing machinery and equipment to ashes. Thick plumes of smoke and towering flames were visible from a considerable distance, triggering panic among nearby residents.
On being alerted, Fire Services personnel from R. Udayagiri rushed to the spot and launched an immediate firefighting operation. After hours of sustained efforts, the blaze was brought under control, preventing it from spreading to adjacent residential areas and nearby establishments.
Despite the swift response, several maize-processing machines, raw materials, and other equipment were completely destroyed in the fire. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported.
The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined. Authorities have initiated an investigation to ascertain whether the incident was caused by a short circuit or any other technical fault. Further details are awaited as officials continue to assess the extent of the damage.
