A female elephant was found dead inside a forest area under the Muribahal Range in Odisha’s Bolangir district on Tuesday, triggering an investigation by the Forest Department.
The carcass was discovered near Jamilisar village under the Jaytara Section after local villagers alerted forest officials on Tuesday morning. Acting on the information, teams from the Forest Department and police rushed to the spot, secured the area, and conducted a preliminary inspection.
Forest officials said the elephant had entered the Muribahal Range from the Titilagarh Range a few days ago and was reportedly suffering from illness. Its movement was being closely monitored, and arrangements were underway to provide medical treatment.
Preliminary findings suggest that the elephant likely died on Monday night. Officials believe the animal was aged and may have succumbed to health-related complications. However, they clarified that the exact cause of death would be established only after a post-mortem examination.
Bolangir Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF), along with two forest rangers, visited the site to assess the situation. Muribahal Forest Ranger Siba Prasad Naik confirmed that an investigation is underway.
An expert team from Bhubaneswar is expected to conduct the post-mortem, after which details regarding the elephant’s illness and cause of death will be known.
