800 Retired Police Personnel to Return as Special Police Officers in Odisha

The Odisha government has approved the reappointment of around 800 retired police officers as Special Police Officers (SPOs) on a one-year contractual basis to strengthen law enforcement across the state.

The Odisha government has approved the reappointment of around 800 retired police officers as Special Police Officers (SPOs) on a one-year contractual basis to strengthen policing across the state. Eligible retirees include former Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASI), Sub-Inspectors (SI), and Inspectors under the age of 65, with a “very good” service record and no pending disciplinary action.

The Home Department has issued official instructions to the DGP and Inspector Generals, and a special selection committee will oversee the recruitment process in line with General Administration Department guidelines. The initiative aims to leverage the experience of retired officers to support regular police personnel, enhance law and order management, and improve operational efficiency across Odisha’s districts.
