In a major crackdown on wildlife trafficking, the Motu Forest Department in Odisha’s Malkangiri district rescued631 live turtlesduring a raid conducted along the Odisha–Andhra Pradesh border on Thursday. Seven persons were arrested in connection with the alleged smuggling attempt.
According to forest officials, the operation was carried out at theMotu border areaafter authorities received specific information about illegal turtle trading in the region. Acting on the tip-off, forest department personnel conducted a raid and intercepted a group of traders involved in the suspected wildlife trafficking.
Officials saidtwo traders from Andhra Pradesh were allegedly selling the turtles to five other traderswhen the forest department team reached the spot and carried out the operation.
During the raid, authoritiesrescued 631 live turtles, which were reportedly being transported in38 trays. The forest department also arrested all seven individuals present at the location.
In addition to the animals, officialsseized one four-wheeler, two motorcycles, and six mobile phonesfrom the accused during the operation.
Forest officials stated that the rescued turtlesweigh nearly two tonnes in totaland are estimated to be worthseveral lakh rupees in the illegal wildlife trade market.
The turtles have been taken into custody by the forest department, and arrangements are being made for their proper care and release as per wildlife protection guidelines.
Authorities suspect that the accused were part of across-border wildlife smuggling network operating between Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.
Officials also pointed out that this is not the first such incident reported in the region. Earlier, onMarch 1, theKalimela Forest Department rescued around 200 live turtlesfrom a forest area nearMV-62 village.
