In a major crackdown on wildlife trafficking, the Motu Forest Department in Odisha’s Malkangiri district rescued 631 live turtles and arrested seven persons near the Odisha–Andhra Pradesh border on Thursday.
According to forest officials, the operation was carried out at the Motu border after authorities received specific information about illegal turtle trading in the area. During the raid, two traders from Andhra Pradesh were allegedly caught selling the turtles to five other traders when forest officials intervened and detained them.
During the operation, officials rescued a total of 631 turtles that were being transported in 38 trays. The turtles collectively weigh around two tonnes and are estimated to be worth several lakh rupees in the illegal wildlife market.
Forest authorities also seized one four-wheeler, two motorcycles and six mobile phones from the accused during the crackdown. The rescued turtles were taken into the custody of the forest department for further care and legal procedures.
Officials suspect that the accused were involved in cross-border wildlife smuggling between Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. The incident has raised concerns as it follows a similar case earlier this month when the Kalimela Forest Department rescued 200 live turtles near MV-62 village.
Authorities said investigations are underway to identify other individuals linked to the illegal wildlife trade network operating in the border region.
