A major financial fraud has allegedly been uncovered at the Baiganabadia Post Office under Jaleswar block in Odisha’s Balasore district, where a postmaster is accused of misappropriating around ₹1.5 crore deposited by local residents.
According to allegations, the postmaster accepted deposits from hundreds of villagers but failed to officially record the transactions in the post office system. Instead, he reportedly issued handwritten receipts to depositors, raising suspicion about the legitimacy of the transactions.
The alleged fraud came to light when several account holders visited the post office to withdraw their savings but discovered that no money had been credited to their accounts. Preliminary estimates suggest that around ₹1.5 crore may have been misappropriated in the incident.
Sources said many of the affected depositors belong to economically weaker sections and had invested their life savings in the post office schemes.
After the fraud surfaced, the accused postmaster reportedly went missing, triggering panic and anger among the victims. A large number of residents staged protests outside the district head post office demanding immediate action, recovery of their money and strict punishment for those responsible.
Authorities are expected to conduct a detailed investigation into the matter to determine the exact amount involved and trace the absconding official.
