Odisha witnessed a tragic surge in road accidents as at least 14 people lost their lives in separate mishaps across the state within a span of 24 hours. The series of fatal incidents has once again raised serious concerns over road safety and traffic regulation enforcement in the region.
One of the most heartbreaking accidents occurred near Tentuli on National Highway-9 in Keonjhar district. A motorcycle carrying a family rammed into the rear of a truck, resulting in the death of a father and his son. The deceased was identified as Md. Noor, a small shop owner who ran a business in Tentuli to support his family. Noor was travelling with his wife and son when the accident took place. While Noor and his son died on the spot, his wife sustained critical injuries and was rushed to a hospital for treatment.
In another incident, a speeding car crashed into an auto-rickshaw at NISER Square in Jatni, killing one person and leaving four others seriously injured. The injured victims were rescued and admitted to a government hospital in Khordha for medical care. Police have started an investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
Apart from these incidents, several other fatal accidents were reported from different districts across Odisha. Four people died in Bargarh, three in Sambalpur, two in Sundargarh and one person in Bolangir district.
The rising number of road accidents has triggered fresh concerns about road safety in the state. According to earlier data shared by Odisha Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena in the Legislative Assembly, the state records an average of around 31 road accidents every day, resulting in nearly 27 injuries and approximately 15 deaths.
Statistics show that, on average, five accidents occur every four hours, while three people lose their lives nearly every five hours in the state. Over the past five years until March 2025, Odisha recorded an annual average of 11,366 road accidents, leaving around 10,008 people injured and claiming about 5,433 lives.
Despite several road safety initiatives launched by the state government, experts say stricter enforcement of traffic rules and better road safety awareness are urgently needed to reduce the alarming number of accidents.
