Tension prevailed in the Nimapada area of Puri district in Odisha after the body of a youth was found hanging from a tree on Tuesday morning, sparking protests by villagers outside the local police station.
The deceased has been identified as Subrat Bhoi. His body was reportedly recovered near Dihabadi village under the jurisdiction of the Nimapada area.
According to reports, the youth had been taken for questioning on Monday in connection with allegations related to the abduction of a minor girl.
Police sources said the body of Subrat Bhoi was discovered hanging from a tree in a field near the village early Tuesday morning. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead.
The incident soon led to tension in the area as hundreds of villagers gathered outside the Nimapada Police Station and staged a dharna while keeping the body there. Protesters demanded justice and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the youth’s death.
Family members of the deceased alleged that the youth died by suicide after being unable to bear alleged torture by the police.
Abhay Bhoi, the brother of the deceased, claimed that the family did not know where Subrat had been taken on Monday night and alleged that police officials were responsible for his death.
However, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Nimapada denied the allegations made by the family and clarified that the youth had never been brought to the police station.
According to the SDPO, the minor girl involved in the case had been handed over by the youth’s family on Monday night. He further stated that the family later informed authorities that the youth had been found hanging in the village cemetery and was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead.
Responding to allegations of custodial torture, the officer maintained that police officials had never met the youth. He also said that the officer being accused had only visited the youth’s residence as part of the investigation but had not interacted with him.
The SDPO added that CCTV footage from the police station could be examined to verify that the youth had never been brought there
