When discussing top engineering institutions today, names like the Indian Institutes of Technology, Stanford University, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology often dominate global rankings. However, the origins of formal engineering education date back more than 300 years to early 18th-century Europe.
The world’s first engineering university is widely recognised as Czech Technical University in Prague (CTU), founded on January 18, 1707, in Prague, then part of the Habsburg Empire. Established by Emperor Joseph I, it was initially known as the Estates Engineering School.
The idea was proposed by Christian Joseph Willenberg, a fortification expert who sought approval in 1705 to train students in engineering techniques focused primarily on military fortifications and civil construction. At a time marked by frequent wars across Europe, technical expertise in defence architecture and infrastructure was in high demand.
Early engineering education was practical and limited in scope. Students studied fortification design, surveying, mapmaking, drainage systems, and construction planning. These skills were essential for building roads, bridges, and defensive structures.
Over time, as Europe moved into the Industrial Revolution, engineering education expanded. New departments in mechanical engineering, technical chemistry, water systems, and road construction emerged, transforming engineering from a military necessity into an industrial cornerstone.
Following CTU, several historic institutions were established across Europe:
TU Braunschweig (1745)
University of Freiburg (1765, later developing strong technical faculties)
Istanbul Technical University (1773)
Clausthal University of Technology (1775)
These institutions helped formalise engineering education and supported Europe’s industrial expansion.
In India, structured engineering education began with the establishment of the Engineering College at Roorkee in 1847. It was later renamed Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1854 and eventually became Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee in 2001. Initially created to train civil engineers for irrigation and infrastructure projects, it played a crucial role in India’s development.
Today, Czech Technical University offers over 100 programmes spanning aerospace engineering, robotics, biomedical sciences, and environmental engineering—fields unimaginable in 1707.
Engineering education has continuously evolved to address society’s shifting challenges—from fortifications and canals to electrification, space exploration, artificial intelligence, and climate solutions.
The story of the first engineering university reflects more than a historical milestone. It represents how societies institutionalised technical knowledge to build infrastructure, drive innovation, and shape the future.
