In a major crackdown on alleged employment fraud, Khandagiri police in Bhubaneswar arrested a woman accused of duping multiple job aspirants by promising them employment opportunities.
The accused, identified as Sureshwari Jena, was taken into custody on Saturday following several complaints lodged against her. She had reportedly claimed to be a volunteer and allegedly collected money from individuals under the pretext of providing jobs.
According to police sources, a case was registered at Khandagiri police station after multiple victims came forward with allegations. In the present case alone, the estimated fraud amount ranges between Rs 20 lakh and Rs 25 lakh. However, investigators suspect that the overall cheating amount across different cases may run into several crores of rupees.
Police apprehended Jena from Keonjhar. Prior to her arrest, she had approached the High Court seeking anticipatory bail in connection with the allegations.
After her bail plea was rejected, police moved swiftly to arrest her in compliance with the court’s directives.
Authorities are now scrutinising financial records and transaction details to determine the full extent of the alleged scam. Police are also verifying the number of complainants and assessing whether a larger network may be involved.
Further investigation is underway, and officials have indicated that additional charges may be added depending on the findings.
