Artificial Intelligence is Transforming Indian Classrooms
Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping how students learn and teachers teach, offering faster access to information, richer feedback, and opportunities for personalised learning. For India’s1.5 million schoolsand260 million students, this shift is profound: traditional methods focused on memorisation no longer align with a world where information is instant, but comprehension still requires care.
AI tools are entering classrooms faster than schools can fully prepare. Over70% of teachersalready use AI for lesson planning and activity creation. Yet many remain uncertain about its accuracy, limitations, and appropriate use. Parents and school leaders echo these concerns, emphasizing the need for clear guidance, structured training, and responsible integration. Without this, AI risks becoming a shortcut rather than a genuine learning aid.
Kushal Raj Chakravorty, Founder & Managing Trustee of Lotus Petal Foundation, highlights how AI’s rapid entry is forcing schools to rethink learning itself. He argues thatfuture-ready education must prioritise judgment, ethics, and critical thinking over rote knowledgein an AI-first world.
Teachers now rely on AI-enabled platforms to generate worksheets, analyse learning patterns, and manage administrative tasks. Students receive faster feedback, but gaps persist. Some learners begin depending on automated answers. Many schools struggle with uneven infrastructure and limited teacher training, resulting in fragmented adoption across regions and school types.
National policy has set a clear direction:from the 2026-27 academic year, AI will be introduced as a subject from Class 3 onwards, alongside modules on robotics, computational thinking, and AI literacy. Universities are also updating curricula across disciplines.
However, readiness varies:urban schoolsmove faster due to stronger digital access, whilerural and government schoolsface bandwidth issues, device shortages, and limited digital support. If unaddressed, these gaps may widen.
To prepare students for an AI-driven world, education must go beyond recall. Students need:
Analytical reasoning
Creativity
Communication skills
Ethics and emotional intelligence
They should learn to question information, interpret data, draw connections, and apply ideas. Discussion-led classrooms, inquiry-based learning, and practical projects can strengthen these capacities. AI can support learning, buthuman insight must remain at the centre.
Teacher training is essential to clarify when and how AI should be used constructively. Schools must provide stable digital infrastructure, particularly in underserved areas. Equity should guide every decision, ensuring technologyreduces gaps rather than widening them.
Some organisations are already demonstrating solutions.Digital learning programsconnecting trained educators to partner schools through live, interactive classes guide student learning, support teachers, and strengthen infrastructure in schools that need it most.
For example, atLotus Petal Senior Secondary School, theReadToMe programhelps students improve English proficiency through guided reading and structured comprehension. It shows that when paired with strong pedagogy, technology can significantly enhance learning outcomes in foundational subjects.
