In a significant operation, Rayagada Police arrested a web channel journalist and his accomplice on Sunday night for allegedly impersonating Maoists and threatening businesses in the district. According to police, the duo created and displayed fake Maoist banners and posters at three different locations on February 13, sparking fear among residents and company officials operating in the region.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Anubrata Bara alias Ranju, a web journalist from Rayagada town, and Bali Majhi of Kanjangamandi village under the Kashipur police limits. Police say Majhi had previously been arrested in connection with a Maoist-related case.
Investigations revealed that the posters and banners were fabricated and had no links to any active Maoist outfit. The motive appears to be spreading fear and disturbing public order in the district. Additional Superintendent of Police Amulya Kumar Dhar confirmed the arrests and said further investigation is underway to determine the exact intentions behind the act and whether others were involved.
