Star India batter Virat Kohli’s immense popularity was on full display during the second ODI against New Zealand at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot, when an overzealous fan ran onto the field to meet him. The incident occurred during India’s second innings, as the supporter breached security and rushed towards Kohli near the pitch.
Instead of reacting with anger or surprise, Kohli greeted the fan with a warm hug, drawing loud cheers from the crowd. As security personnel hurried in to escort the fan off the field, Kohli was seen gesturing to them to go easy on him — a heartfelt moment that has since taken over social media.
Despite the emotional highlight, it was not Kohli’s day with the bat. The former India captain was dismissed for 23 off 29 balls by Kristian Clarke, ending a run of five consecutive ODI innings with fifty-plus scores. Kohli struck two boundaries before chopping one back onto his stumps.
Following Kohli’s dismissal, KL Rahul played a brilliant rescue act for India. The wicketkeeper-batter smashed an unbeaten 112 off 92 balls, including 11 fours and a six, guiding India to a competitive total of 284/7. Rahul stitched crucial partnerships with Ravindra Jadeja and Nitish Kumar Reddy, keeping India in the contest.
However, Rahul’s century went in vain as New Zealand chased down the target with ease. Daryl Mitchell starred with an unbeaten 131 off 117 balls, registering yet another century against India. He was well supported by Will Young, with the pair adding 162 runs for the third wicket, before Glenn Phillips finished the chase.
New Zealand sealed a seven-wicket win in 47.3 overs to level the ODI series 1–1. The decider will be played on January 18 at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore, setting up a thrilling finale.
