A rare disagreement has reportedly emerged between the United States and Israel following Israel’s large-scale strikes on Iran’s oil infrastructure, as the ongoing war in the Middle East continues to intensify.
According to reports, Israeli airstrikes targeted several fuel depots in Iran on Saturday, triggering massive fires across parts of Tehran. Thick smoke was seen rising over the Iranian capital, with flames visible from miles away. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said the targeted facilities were used by the Iranian regime to supply fuel to various consumers, including its military units.
Israeli officials also indicated that the strikes were intended as a warning to Tehran against targeting Israeli civilian infrastructure.
However, the scale of the attacks reportedly surprised officials in Washington. A senior US official said the United States believed the strikes were “not a good idea,” and another official said the message conveyed to Israel afterward was a blunt expression of shock.
Reports suggest that while Israel had informed the US military before launching the operation, Washington had not anticipated such a wide-ranging attack on Iranian fuel storage sites.
US officials are concerned that targeting facilities associated with civilian fuel supply could have unintended consequences. Such strikes may increase domestic support for Iran’s government and contribute to rising global oil prices.
Meanwhile, Iran has warned that continued attacks on its energy infrastructure could lead to retaliation across the region. A spokesperson from Iran’s military command said Tehran had so far avoided targeting energy infrastructure in other countries but may reconsider if the attacks continue.
The escalating conflict has already begun affecting global energy markets. Oil prices have surged past $100 per barrel for the first time in more than three and a half years amid fears of disruptions to energy supply routes in the Middle East.
Global markets are particularly worried about the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime route through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes. Iran has reportedly restricted access through the strait for the US, Israel and their Western allies as the conflict expands across the region.
Despite the surge in oil prices, US President Donald Trump downplayed the impact, calling the rise a “very small price to pay for world peace” and expressing confidence that prices would fall once the conflict subsides.
