US-Backed Mexican Military Raid Kills Drug Lord El Mencho in Jalisco

Mexico’s most wanted cartel boss Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes was killed during a military raid supported by US intelligence. His death marks a major blow to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel but triggered violent retaliation and raised fears of further instability.

One of the world’s most notorious drug lords, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as El Mencho, was killed on Sunday following a high-level military raid conducted by Mexican Special Forces in Tapalpa, located in the western state of Jalisco. The operation was carried out by Mexican authorities with critical intelligence support from the United States, marking one of the most significant joint efforts in the ongoing fight against drug cartels.

According to Mexican officials, the raid was based on weeks of surveillance, informant tips, and intelligence inputs. US agencies, particularly the newly formed Joint Interagency Task Force-Counter Cartel (JITF-CC), played a key role by providing “complementary intelligence” that helped pinpoint El Mencho’s exact location. This intelligence unit was created to dismantle cartel networks threatening US national security and applies strategies previously used against global terror organisations.

When Mexican forces stormed the suspected safe house, intense gunfire broke out between cartel gunmen and the military. El Mencho, who had evaded capture for years and carried a $15 million US bounty, was seriously injured during the encounter. Although authorities attempted to airlift him to Mexico City for urgent medical treatment, he died from his injuries before reaching the hospital.

El Mencho was the powerful leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, one of Mexico’s most violent and influential criminal groups responsible for trafficking massive quantities of fentanyl, cocaine, and methamphetamine into the United States. His death represents a major strategic victory for both Mexico and the US in their fight against organised crime.

However, the aftermath quickly turned violent. Cartel members launched retaliatory attacks across multiple Mexican states, including highway blockades, arson, and armed clashes. Security forces were deployed in large numbers to restore order, while several countries issued travel advisories urging their citizens to remain cautious.

Security experts warn that while El Mencho’s death weakens the cartel’s leadership, it could also create a dangerous power vacuum, potentially triggering internal conflicts and further violence as rival factions compete for control.
