Donald Trump has warned that the United States would respond with overwhelming force if Iran attempts to block the flow of oil through the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz.
In a message posted on social media, Trump issued a strong warning to Tehran amid rising geopolitical tensions across West Asia. The US president stated that any attempt to disrupt oil shipments through the vital maritime route would invite a significantly stronger military response from Washington.
“If Iran does anything that stops the flow of oil within the Strait of Hormuz, they will be hit by the United States of Americatwenty times harderthan they have been hit thus far,” Trump wrote.
Trump also threatened broader destruction if Iran attempted to block the strategic shipping route. According to him, the United States would target critical infrastructure to prevent Tehran from rebuilding its capabilities.
“Additionally, we will take out easily destroyable targets that will make it virtually impossible for Iran to ever be built back as a nation again — death, fire and fury will reign upon them,” he said, while adding that he hoped such a situation would not occur.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints for energy supplies. A large portion of global crude oil exports passes through the narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf with international shipping routes.
Trump said maintaining open access through the strait benefits several countries that depend heavily on oil transported through the route.
“This is a gift from the United States of America to China and all nations that heavily use the Hormuz Strait,” he said.
The warning comes amid heightened tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran in the region. Analysts say disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz could severely affect global energy markets.
Experts estimate thataround 20 million barrels of oil pass through the Strait of Hormuz every day, making it one of the most strategically significant waterways in the global oil trade.
