US President Donald Trump on Tuesday sounded the alarm about the stakes of the 2026 midterm elections while addressing a House Republican caucus retreat in Washington, warning that losing control of the House could prompt Democrats to pursue impeachment proceedings against him. Trump urged Republican lawmakers to treat the midterms as a critical political battle, asserting that if the GOP fails to retain its majority, Democrats will “find a reason” to impeach him.

Speaking at the retreat, Trump highlighted the historic trend of the president’s party losing seats in midterm elections and acknowledged public dissatisfaction with aspects of his leadership and the economy, even as he expressed confidence in his overall record.
