US President Donald Trump on Tuesday sounded the alarm about the stakes of the 2026 midterm elections while addressing a House Republican caucus retreat in Washington, warning that losing control of the House could prompt Democrats to pursue impeachment proceedings against him. Trump urged Republican lawmakers to treat the midterms as a critical political battle, asserting that if the GOP fails to retain its majority, Democrats will “find a reason” to impeach him.

Speaking at the retreat, Trump highlighted the historic trend of the president’s party losing seats in midterm elections and acknowledged public dissatisfaction with aspects of his leadership and the economy, even as he expressed confidence in his overall record. He framed the upcoming polls as decisive not only for congressional control but also for safeguarding his presidency from potential challenges by the opposition.

Reports note that Democrats are approaching the 2026 cycle with renewed optimism after recent electoral gains, though a sweeping victory remains uncertain. A Democratic takeover of the House would empower the party to advance impeachment efforts—a scenario Trump emphasized as a key motivation for Republican unity and voter mobilisation.

House Speaker Mike Johnson has echoed similar concerns, warning that a shift in House control could lead to impeachment proceedings and political instability. Trump, who was previously impeached twice during his first term, remains a polarising figure, and his comments underscore the heightened political tensions as both parties prepare for what is expected to be a closely contested midterm election year.
