A 17-year-old schoolgirl from Vilaathikulam, Thoothukudi, was found murdered near her home on Wednesday after being reported missing the previous night. Initial reports indicate the victim was subjected to sexual assault, leading her family and local residents to stage intense protests demanding immediate justice.

Political tensions have escalated following the crime; DMK MP Kanimozhi has assured the public that the police are working "vigorously" to ensure the harshest punishment for the perpetrators. Conversely, the BJP has lashed out at the ruling government, citing a "deteriorating law and order situation" and alleging that the state has become unsafe for women and children. Police investigations are currently ongoing to identify and apprehend the suspects.
