Venezuela is no ordinary energy producer. It holds the world’s largest proven oil reserves, estimated at over 300 billion barrels, giving it enormous strategic weight in global energy markets. In recent years, Caracas began experimenting with oil sales in non-dollar currencies, including the Chinese yuan and digital payment systems, as a way to bypass US sanctions and reduce dependence on American-controlled financial channels.
This shift directly touches the foundations of the petrodollar system—the post-1970s arrangement under which most global oil trade is priced and settled in US dollars. Because oil is essential to every economy, this system ensures constant global demand for dollars, helping the US finance deficits cheaply and extend financial influence through sanctions and asset controls.
By accepting payments outside the dollar system, Venezuela signalled that a major oil exporter could survive—even partially—without relying on the greenback. Analysts say this raised alarms in Washington, where any erosion of dollar dominance in energy trade is viewed as a strategic threat, not merely a commercial experiment.
Historically, US interventions in oil-rich states—from Iraq to Libya—have often been followed by intense scrutiny over energy access and currency power, even when official justifications focused on security or human rights. Venezuela’s case fits a familiar pattern in which oil, money and geopolitics intersect.
The petrodollar is far from collapsing, and most global crude is still traded in dollars. But the Venezuela episode highlights a gradual shift: more countries are exploring alternative currencies, regional trade arrangements and digital payments. Together, these moves are beginning to question the dollar’s unquestioned dominance in global energy markets.
In that sense, the crisis in Venezuela is not just about regime change or security—it reflects a broader struggle over who controls the flow of oil, capital and power in the global system.
