UPSC CSE 2026 Notification Out: Vacancies Drop to 933, Rules Tighten for IAS, IPS Aspirants

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) released the Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2026 notification on February 4, announcing just 933 vacancies—significantly fewer than previous years. Along with reduced posts, the notification introduces stricter eligibility rules, limits repeat attempts for selected candidates, and brings digital security upgrades, making the competition tougher for aspirants.

The UPSC Civil Services Examination 2026 notification has brought major changes that directly impact lakhs of aspirants. With only 933 vacancies announced—down from 979 last year and over 1,100 two years ago—the competition for India’s top administrative services is set to intensify further.

While the exam pattern and syllabus remain unchanged, the rules governing eligibility and repeat attempts have been tightened. Candidates already selected for the Indian Police Service (IPS) cannot opt for the same service again. Serving IAS and IFS officers are not eligible to appear, even if their appointment happens after the preliminary exam but before the mains.

The notification also introduces a one-time opportunity allowing candidates already allotted a service to use their remaining attempts once in 2026 or 2027 without resigning. In addition, UPSC has upgraded its application process by introducing a new Aadhaar-linked digital portal and AI-based facial recognition to prevent impersonation.

With fewer vacancies, stricter service rules, and tighter digital verification, aspirants now face increased pressure where strategy, timing, and eligibility matter as much as preparation and marks.
