In a major boost to infrastructure development in Odisha’s capital region, the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has granted environmental clearance to the Rameswar–Tangi Ring Road project. The Centre has also accorded wildlife clearance for the Gobindpur–Tangi stretch (CRR-2), removing a key obstacle for the long-pending Capital Region Ring Road (CRR) project.
With these approvals in place, the project is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack by diverting heavy and through traffic away from congested city roads. Officials said the ring road will serve as a strategic bypass, improving traffic flow and easing pressure on major urban stretches.
Land acquisition for the project has reached an advanced stage, with around 94 per cent of the required land already acquired. Authorities believe this will help fast-track construction and ensure timely execution.
The Capital Region Ring Road project involves the development of a 110-kilometre-long, six-lane, access-controlled greenfield highway connecting Rameswar to Tangi. Once completed, it will bypass key urban centres such as Khordha, Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, reducing travel time and enhancing logistics efficiency.
The project is being implemented under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM), which combines public and private sector participation to ensure quality construction and long-term sustainability. Besides easing traffic congestion, the ring road is expected to boost regional connectivity, improve road safety, and support economic growth aligned with Odisha’s future urban expansion plans.
