Budget 2026: Sunday Trading Session Raises Volatility Risks for Retail Investors

The special Sunday trading session held to coincide with the Union Budget presentation has created an unusually volatile and uncertain environment for market participants. Experts warn that thin liquidity and limited institutional participation could distort price action, making Budget Day trading especially risky for retail investors.

Union Budget 2026, has introduced added complexity to an already volatile event. Market experts caution that the weekend timing may amplify unpredictability, particularly for retail traders who are more vulnerable to sharp intraday swings.

According to Santosh Meena, Head of Research at Swastika Investmart Ltd, Budget Day traditionally ranks among the most volatile sessions of the year. Rapid price movements often result in false breakouts and stop-loss triggers before a clear trend emerges. The absence or limited participation of institutional investors on a Sunday further exacerbates the risk, as reduced liquidity can lead to erratic market behaviour.

Meena notes that early market reactions during the Sunday session are unlikely to reflect the true impact of the Budget. The more reliable and sustainable trend is expected to emerge on Monday, once institutional investors return and fully assess the Budget’s fine print.

From a technical perspective, Nifty is seen finding immediate support near 24,900, with stronger support at 24,500, while resistance lies around 25,500 and 25,800. Bank Nifty is expected to hold support at 59,000 and 58,000, with resistance levels near 60,600 and 61,800. However, meaningful breakouts will require strong volumes, which may be absent during the weekend session.

Sectorally, Defence, Infrastructure and Power stocks are likely to remain in focus due to their linkage with government capital expenditure. Financials and housing stocks may also see volatility driven by taxation and credit-related announcements. Given these conditions, experts advise caution, smaller position sizes or avoiding trading until normal market conditions resume.
