There’s an old adage that says every story has three sides: yours, mine, and the truth. Netflix’s six-part crime thriller His & Hers, adapted from Alice Feeney’s twisty novel, sharpens that idea: “There are always two sides to a story, which means someone is always lying.” The series sets up a tense narrative hide-and-seek, where justice isn’t the prize—clarity is.
The limited series opens with a striking duality. In the woods, a woman lies bloodied and barely alive, while in a nearby home another woman scrubs surfaces with frantic precision. It’s a familiar thriller trope, but executed with enough urgency to maintain momentum throughout the early episodes.
We soon meet Anna Andrews (Tessa Thompson), a disgraced former news anchor returning to her hometown to rebuild her career, and Jack Harper (Jon Bernthal), the detective investigating the murder of Rachel Hopkins. Their dynamic is immediately complicated: estranged spouses with unresolved wounds, clashing professionally while past grievances seep into the investigation. Thompson portrays Anna with brittle, anxious determination, while Bernthal delivers a quiet, tense performance. Together, they’re compelling, though their chemistry occasionally feels restrained.
Rachel, the victim, is far from saintly. Flashbacks reveal a morally ambiguous character, including a stomach-turning school prank, expanding the suspect pool and adding complexity to the narrative. The show excels in exploring old grudges, showing how adolescent rivalries can fuel adult resentments. Cinematography cloaks Dahlonega, Georgia, in glossy, cold blues, creating a landscape that is both beautiful and suffocating.
The script is serviceable, leaning into melodrama to give the series its flavor. Supporting characters get memorable lines, the score swells at suspenseful moments, and nearly every character carries an air of guilt. Yet the series occasionally overcomplicates the plot. Subplots, like Anna’s mother’s fading memory, sometimes feel more like devices than meaningful storylines. The twists, while plentiful, often lack emotional resonance, making the series more of a surface-level thriller than a deep psychological exploration akin to Mare of Easttown or Sharp Objects.
Still, His & Hers thrives on momentum. It demands attention more than logic, delivering a polished, twisty, binge-worthy experience. It may not leave a lasting mark, but it keeps viewers engaged across six tight episodes. Ultimately, the series works because it taps into a familiar dread: returning to a place you thought you’d outgrown, only to find the past waiting at the town gates. Lies, secrets, and a blood-stained truth unfold in a story that’s high-quality escapism—perfect for a weekend binge, even if it falls short of prestige crime television.
