Taapsee Pannu’s latest crime dramaAssi, directed by Anubhav Sinha, opened to an underwhelming response at the box office, earning approximately Rs 0.95 crore net (rounded to Rs 1 crore) on its first day in India, according to trade portal Sacnilk.
Released theatrically on February 20, 2026,Assi— which tackles the serious issue of crimes against women — struggled to draw audiences across major markets. Morning occupancy stood at a low 3.88%, improving slightly to 7.24% in the afternoon and 6.92% in the evening. Chennai emerged as a relatively stronger market, registering around 20% occupancy, while northern cities reported weaker turnout.
In comparison, Haq, the 2025 courtroom drama directed by Suparn Verma and headlined by Yami Gautam, had opened at Rs 1.75 crore net. Despite a modest beginning,Haqwent on to post a lifetime domestic total of Rs 19.86 crore.
Backed by T-Series Films and Benaras Mediaworks, and produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, and Anubhav Sinha himself,Assifeatures an ensemble cast including Kani Kusruti, Revathy, and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub.
The film marks the third collaboration between Taapsee and Anubhav Sinha after their critically acclaimed projects Thappad and Mulk, both of which were praised for their socially relevant themes.
WhileAssihas received a polarised critical response, its box office fate now hinges heavily on weekend growth. As one review noted, audiences may debate the film’s craft and tonal choices, but the harsh realities it portrays remain difficult to ignore.
With a crucial weekend ahead, the film’s commercial trajectory will determine whether word-of-mouth can compensate for its slow opening.
