Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has expressed happiness over the unveiling of a bust of freedom fighter and former Governor-General C Rajagopalachari at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Sharing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s post, Tharoor said he was pleased to see Rajaji honoured at the presidential estate, noting that he was the first Indian to occupy the position before India became a republic.
Tharoor highlighted Rajagopalachari’s ideological principles, including liberal economics, social justice, civilisational pride without communal bias, and strong commitment to constitutional freedoms. He said these values remain relevant today but are followed by very few in contemporary politics.
The bust was unveiled by Droupadi Murmu as part of Rajaji Utsav celebrations. Prime Minister Modi described Rajagopalachari as a visionary leader and said replacing colonial-era symbols reflects India’s effort to honour its own national heroes. The bust replaces one of Edwin Lutyens, who designed major landmarks in New Delhi.
An exhibition showcasing Rajagopalachari’s life and contributions is also being held at Rashtrapati Bhavan to commemorate his legacy and role in shaping modern India.
