Cupid Ltd shares came under intense selling pressure on Monday, sliding nearly 20% intraday on the Bombay Stock Exchange to around ₹344. The stock has now corrected almost 30% over five sessions, erasing a sizeable portion of the gains it had made during a strong recent rally.
Market participants point to profit booking as the primary trigger. Cupid’s stock had surged to record highs above ₹520 in recent months, fuelled by optimism around growth prospects and positive business updates. The sharp run-up pushed the stock into overbought territory, making it vulnerable to a correction once selling began.
The decline intensified after Cupid was placed under the Additional Surveillance Measures (ASM) framework by stock exchanges. Stocks under ASM face stricter margin requirements and closer monitoring, which typically discourages speculative trading and reduces liquidity. For a small-cap stock like Cupid, this often leads to faster unwinding of leveraged positions and sharper price swings.
Heavy trading volumes accompanied the fall, signalling broad-based selling rather than isolated trades. Analysts say this reflects a clear shift in near-term sentiment, with investors choosing to lock in profits amid rising volatility in the broader small-cap segment.
Importantly, there has been no fresh negative company-specific news to explain the sell-off. Cupid has recently reiterated its expansion plans, including setting up a new overseas manufacturing facility, and has maintained a positive outlook on demand. This suggests the current correction is largely market-driven rather than due to any immediate deterioration in fundamentals.
Despite the steep correction, Cupid shares remain well above levels seen before the recent rally. However, near-term volatility is likely to continue. Investors will closely monitor technical support levels, upcoming earnings announcements, and any further regulatory or exchange-related developments. Until fresh catalysts emerge, sentiment around the stock is expected to remain cautious, with sharp swings possible in both directions.
