Three decades after Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayengechanged the face of Indian romance, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol reunited in London to mark the milestone with a grand tribute. The beloved on-screen duo unveiled a bronze statue of their iconic pose from the film, making history as the first Indian movie to be honoured with a statue at Leicester Square. The sculpture captures the timeless chemistry of Raj and Simran- characters who have shaped the cultural memory of generations of moviegoers.
Shah Rukh and Kajol, who continue to remain synonymous with cinematic romance, posed together by the statue, recreating the moment with grace. The actor looked suave in a tailored black suit, while Kajol stunned in an elegant blue saree, embodying the charm that made their pairing unforgettable. Their presence turned Leicester Square into a momentary film set, as fans and onlookers relived the magic.
Directed by Aditya Chopra, DDLJ remains etched as one of India’s most beloved and enduring films. Raj and Simran have become more than just characters- they are cultural symbols. Even 30 years later, the film runs at Mumbai’s famous Maratha Mandir, retaining its record as the longest-running film in Indian cinema.
Shah Rukh Khan reflected on the milestone with heartfelt nostalgia.
"It doesn’t feel like it’s been 30 years since 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge' released. It feels like it happened yesterday because ‘bade bade deshon mein aisi choti choti baatein hoti rehti hain….’ but it still feels unbelievable. I’m truly grateful for all the love that I have received from people from across the world for playing Raj - nobody could have foreseen the kind of place the film made in the hearts of people around the world and I will never forget the moment when everyone started to come...see the film and fall in love,” Shah Rukh had said in a statement.
Kajol highlighted why Simran continues to resonate with women across India.
“There’s a piece of DDLJ in almost every romantic film that came after it, because somewhere, history was made and it never quite left us. For me, Simran is a chapter that refuses to end. She represents millions of girls across this country - girls who want to do what their parents say, who carry tradition in one hand but still reach out for freedom with the other. That’s why she still resonates. Every time someone says, ‘Ja Simran, ja', it signifies the belief that courage and love can coexist," Kajol had shared in the statement.
