In a humanitarian gesture, Pakistan handed over seven Indian civilians at the Attari Integrated Check Post who were detained after accidentally crossing the border during heavy flooding in 2023. The individuals, mostly from Punjab and one from Uttar Pradesh, had been trying to save livestock and farm equipment when strong floodwaters carried them into Pakistani territory.
Some reported being subjected to detention and mistreatment for durations ranging from three months to over two years. The repatriation was part of coordinated diplomatic efforts between India and Pakistan to ensure the return of civilians affected by natural disasters along the border.
