Sri Lanka head coach Sanath Jayasuriya has hinted at stepping down from his role following a disappointing T20 World Cup 2026 campaign at home. Speaking after Sri Lanka’s narrow 5-run loss to Pakistan on Saturday, Jayasuriya acknowledged the team’s progress during his tenure but suggested he would be open to leaving if the board finds a suitable successor.

Jayasuriya’s current contract runs until June 2026, and with a limited-overs tour of Afghanistan scheduled for March, the board may prefer continuity in the short term. “I have not given my official decision to Sri Lanka Cricket yet. I need to discuss with them what comes next,” he said, reflecting on a campaign that failed to gain momentum in the Super 8 phase.

Sri Lanka had progressed from the group stage but suffered successive defeats against England, New Zealand, and Pakistan. Despite a brilliant unbeaten 76 from captain Dasun Shanaka, the team fell just short against Pakistan, extending a trend of T20 World Cup disappointments, having failed to reach the semifinals in five consecutive editions.

Jayasuriya took charge in mid-2024, initially as interim coach before becoming full-time. Under his guidance, Sri Lanka achieved notable successes in ODIs and Tests, including their first ODI series win over India in 27 years and Test victories in England and against New Zealand at home. Across formats, Sri Lanka played 76 matches under his tenure, winning 34, reflecting steady improvement despite struggles in T20 cricket.

With Sri Lanka Cricket exploring potential replacements, Jayasuriya’s future remains under discussion as he reflects on a campaign that ended sooner than expected.
