The government of Odisha is considering the formation of 66 new sub-divisions, Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari informed the State Legislative Assembly on Thursday.
In a written reply in the House, the Minister stated that multiple proposals have been received from various districts seeking the creation of new sub-divisions. These proposals are currently under detailed examination, and the government will take an appropriate decision after assessing administrative feasibility and other relevant factors.
According to the Minister, the highest number of proposals has come from districts such as Bargarh district, Ganjam district and Koraput district. The primary rationale behind these demands is to improve administrative efficiency, enhance public service delivery, and ensure faster implementation of development programmes at the grassroots level.
The proposal for new sub-divisions comes close on the heels of the state government inviting suggestions for the formation of new districts during the 2026–27 financial year. Earlier, the Assembly was informed that memoranda seeking the creation of 31 new districts have already been submitted to the government.
The twin proposals for restructuring administrative boundaries have triggered discussions on governance reforms in the state. Supporters argue that smaller administrative units can help decentralise governance, strengthen law and order management, and facilitate quicker response to local issues and public grievances.
