Have we ever truly imagined the pain hidden behind the painted faces of Jatra (theatre) performers who entertain audiences through the night? A deeply heartbreaking incident from the life of Tamasa Mishra, an actress of the popular Odia Jatra troupe Singhabahini, has brought this harsh reality to light on Sunday.
While her two-and-a-half-year-old son was battling for life in the ICU of a private hospital in Cuttack due to a severe lung infection, Tamasa was performing on stage, fulfilling her professional commitment.
In the middle of the performance, devastating news arrived — her son had passed away. For the grieving mother, it felt as if the sky had collapsed over her head.
The child breathed his last on Friday, leaving Tamasa shattered. Considering the tragedy, the owner of the Jatra troupe granted her leave on humanitarian grounds. Tamasa returned home, expressing gratitude for the support during her darkest hours.
However, bound by professional responsibility and being in a lead role, Tamasa returned to the stage just two days after her son’s death. Her story stands as a stark reminder of the sacrifices and emotional battles endured by folk theatre artists, who often place duty above personal loss — sometimes at an unbearable cost.
However, no comments were received from the theatre artiste in this regard.
Worth mentioning, earlier in another incident, a Jatra folk theatre performance in Bhadrak had turned chaotic on the night of November 11, when an audience member stormed the stage and assaulted an actor during an emotional sequence, triggering panic among spectators.
The incident had taken place at Sahada village under Bhadrak block in the district during a live play staged by the Rajnanidini Jatra troupe.
