The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela has achieved a major milestone in its research and innovation journey by securing over 100 granted patents to date. According to official figures, the institute has filed 230 patent applications so far, including 218 national and 12 international filings, with 101 patents already granted.
The pace of innovation has accelerated in recent years, with 23 patents granted in 2025 alone. Officials noted that the sharp rise in patent filings during 2025 is expected to translate into even more grants in the coming years, considering the examination timeline.
The patents cover a wide range of cutting-edge areas, including AI-enabled vehicular communication, autonomous drone systems, industrial waste treatment technologies, IoT-based health monitoring devices, sustainable food packaging, and advanced materials derived from waste resources.
NIT Rourkela Director Prof. K. Umamaheshwar Rao said the achievement reflects the institute’s efforts to build a strong ecosystem of research, innovation, and intellectual property. With 91 patent applications filed in 2025, the institute aims to double its granted patents in the coming year, contributing to national goals such as Viksit Bharat 2047.
Supporting this effort is the Centre for Intellectual Property Rights (CIPR), which facilitates patent filing, technology transfer, licensing, and industry collaboration. Looking ahead, NIT Rourkela plans to expand industry partnerships, increase international filings, and align innovation efforts with initiatives like Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India.
