Farmers and exporters from Maharashtra are facing significant financial setbacks as around 800 to 1,000 containers of agricultural produce remain stranded at Jebel Ali Port due to disruptions caused by the ongoing US-Iran conflict. The halted operations at one of the Middle East’s largest ports have left shipments of bananas, grapes, pomegranates, watermelons, leafy vegetables, and onions unloaded, stalling exports and piling up produce in packhouses.
Traders highlighted that the disruption is particularly affecting the grape trade, with 5,000–6,000 tonnes of grapes at ports and another 10,000 tonnes in orchards potentially forced into domestic markets at lower prices. Containers from Nashik and JNPT near Mumbai remain stuck, causing congestion and heavy financial losses, with each container representing several lakh rupees.
Farmer organizations have called for urgent government intervention, including subsidies, port charge waivers, and temporary procurement schemes. Exporters have begun recalling damaged consignments to prevent further losses.
The conflict has also affected imports from Iran and the Gulf, with 600–700 containers carrying apples, kiwi, and dates stuck at Iranian ports. Additionally, India’s sugar exports could be severely impacted, with fears that only 5 lakh tonnes of the 20 lakh tonnes permitted for export may be shipped.
If the conflict continues, agricultural trade from Maharashtra may face further setbacks, directly impacting farmers during the peak harvest season and threatening India’s overseas supply chains.
