Devotees flocked to the Maa Kalijai Temple in Chilika on Wednesday to celebrate Makar Sankranti, observing the day with devotion and traditional rituals. Situated entirely on water, the temple is believed to grant the wishes of its visitors, attracting pilgrims from across the region.
The temple opened at 5 a.m., starting the day with ceremonial rites. The goddess was given a ritual bath and anointed with chandan (sandalwood paste), then adorned with gold and silver ornaments according to age-old traditions. Devotees were allowed darshan from 6 a.m., witnessing the goddess in her resplendent attire.
Special pujas marked the celebrations, including the continuous ‘Gupta Niti Puja’ throughout the night. Makar rice was distributed among devotees, symbolizing blessings and prosperity. The Parikud Raja, dressed in traditional attire, performed a special puja, enhancing the spiritual significance of the occasion.
Believers come to Maa Kalijai on Makar Sankranti with the hope of having their wishes fulfilled, making the festival a sacred and vibrant event. The blend of traditional rituals, community participation, and deep devotion created a lively and festive atmosphere at the water-bound temple.
