Coconut Islandis a name commonly linked with India’s tropical paradise in the Arabian Sea. The title most prominently refers toLakshadweep, a stunning archipelago of coral atolls known for its expansive coconut groves, turquoise lagoons and rich marine biodiversity.
Visitors are attracted to Lakshadweep for its tranquil beaches, crystal-clear waters and well-preserved island traditions, making it one of India’s most distinctive and unspoilt travel destinations.
Lakshadweep is a Union Territory located off the Kerala coast, about200–400 kilometres from the Indian mainland. The archipelago comprises36 islands, including well-known names such asKavaratti, Agatti and Bangaram, withKavaratti serving as the administrative centre.
The islands are celebrated for their coral reefs, shallow lagoons and abundant coconut palms—features that have earned the region its popular nickname,Coconut Island. Each island offers a window into traditional island life, shaped by local cuisine, handicrafts and a strong fishing culture.
Lakshadweep is densely covered with coconut palms that dominate the landscape and sustain local livelihoods. Coconuts are widely used for cooking, oil extraction, handicrafts and even roofing materials in traditional homes.
This abundance of coconut trees, paired with white sandy beaches and vivid blue waters, has led travellers and media alike to refer to Lakshadweep asIndia’s Coconut Island.
Tourists can access Lakshadweep fromKochi, Kerala. Regular passenger ships operate to several islands, while flights connect Kochi toAgatti Airport, the territory’s only airport.
Entry permits are mandatory and are usually arranged along with travel bookings. Visitors are also required to follow guidelines issued by the Union Territory administration.
Inter-island travel is facilitated by small boats, and local tour operators offer guided excursions and water-based activities.
On the Indian mainland,St Mary’s Island near Malpe in Karnatakais also commonly called Coconut Island. Though much smaller than Lakshadweep, it is lined with palm trees and seashell beaches, giving it a similar tropical appeal.
