Kharge Raises Odisha Anganwadi Caste Discrimination Issue in Rajya Sabha

Congress president and Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge raised the issue of alleged caste-based discrimination at an Anganwadi centre in Odisha during Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha, calling it a serious violation of constitutional values.

The issue of alleged caste-based discrimination at an Anganwadi centre in Odisha was raised in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday by Congress chief and Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge. Flagging the matter during Zero Hour, Kharge described the incident as deeply disturbing and contrary to the spirit of the Constitution.

Kharge referred to the Nuagaon Anganwadi Centre in Rajnagar block of Kendrapara district, where villagers have reportedly been boycotting the centre for the past three months. According to him, the protest began after a Dalit woman was appointed as an Anganwadi helper, with residents allegedly refusing to send their children to the centre for meals.

Terming the incident as workplace caste discrimination, Kharge said such actions are unconstitutional and also infringe upon children’s fundamental right to nutrition and education. “Caste discrimination at the workplace is a direct violation of the Constitution. Denying children access to Anganwadi services because of caste prejudice is unacceptable,” he said, demanding a thorough investigation into the matter.

Following media reports, including coverage by OTV, senior district officials reportedly visited the village to assess the situation. The team included the Sub-Collector, Tahsildar, Child Development Project Officer (CDPO), and the District Welfare Officer.

Officials attempted to hold discussions with villagers at the Anganwadi centre; however, no residents reportedly turned up for the meeting. Authorities also verified the appointment records of the Anganwadi helper and stated that her recruitment was carried out following due procedure
