Kandhamal district has been experiencing an intense cold wave for the past one and a half months, with temperatures consistently remaining below 10 degrees Celsius since November 10. The situation has worsened in recent days as dense fog enveloped large parts of the district, pushing the minimum temperature below 5 degrees Celsius and significantly affecting daily life.
The prolonged cold spell has disrupted normal activities, particularly during the early morning and late evening hours. Thick fog has reduced visibility on major roads, affecting vehicular movement and causing inconvenience to commuters. Residents have been forced to remain indoors, while daily wage workers and farmers are facing difficulties due to the harsh weather conditions.
People have been seen wrapped in heavy woollens and lighting bonfires to keep themselves warm, especially in rural and semi-urban areas. The cold wave has also impacted school attendance and morning routines, with many venturing out only after sunrise.
Health officials have advised people, especially children, the elderly, and those with respiratory ailments, to take necessary precautions against the biting cold. Meanwhile, the administration is closely monitoring the situation and has urged residents to remain cautious during foggy conditions, particularly while travelling at night or in the early morning hours.
With weather conditions expected to remain cold in the coming days, authorities have appealed to the public to stay alert and take preventive measures to avoid cold-related illnesses.
