According to theFinancial Timesand multiple intelligence sources, Israel spent years hacking Iran’s traffic camera system and infiltrating mobile phone networks to monitor Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and his security detail. Critical camera angles revealed bodyguard routines and movements near Khamenei’s compound, providing real-time intelligence to coordinate the assassination.
The operation, conducted jointly with the US, culminated in precision airstrikes targeting Khamenei’s compound in Tehran, killing him along with around 40 senior Iranian officials, including the Revolutionary Guard chief. The strikes were executed in broad daylight for maximum surprise.
Earlier, Israel had also used innovative methods against Hezbollah in Lebanon and Syria, including explosive-laden pagers disguised as regular devices, demonstrating sophisticated covert capabilities.
The assassination and ensuing strikes have intensified the Gulf conflict, leading to the destruction of over 1,250 Iranian targets, at least 11 Iranian ships, and multiple US casualties in Kuwait. Global aviation disruptions and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz have also sent energy prices sharply higher, signaling severe regional escalation.
