Tensions in the Middle East escalated further after Iran allegedly targeted two oil tankers near Iraq’s Al Faw Port overnight, killing one person and sparking a massive fire at sea. The vessels involved in the attack were the Maltese-flagged tankerZefyrosand the Marshall Islands-flaggedSafesea Vishnu, which is owned by the US-based company Safesea Transport Inc.
Videos circulating on social media showed a powerful explosion followed by a large blaze engulfing the ships. Flames were also seen spreading across the water’s surface, suggesting that oil may have leaked from the tankers. The vessels were reportedly anchored alongside each other when the attack occurred.
According to ship-tracking platform TankerTrackers.com, the tankers were believed to be carrying up to 400,000 barrels of Iraqi oil. Following the explosions, authorities managed to rescue 38 foreign crew members from the damaged ships.
The attack took place within Iraq’s territorial waters at Al Faw Port, a major deep-water port located near the southern city of Basra. The incident comes as tensions continue to rise in the region, with multiple ships being targeted in recent weeks in and around the Strait of Hormuz amid the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran.
Security analysts warn that such incidents could further threaten global oil supply routes and heighten geopolitical instability in the Middle East.
