The ongoing conflict involving Iran has begun to impact India’s cooking gas supply, leading to a shortage of commercial LPG cylinders across several major cities. Restaurants and hotels in Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Lucknow are among the worst affected as disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz — a crucial global energy route — threaten LPG imports.
India imports more than 60 percent of its LPG requirement, and nearly 85–90 percent of those imports pass through the Strait of Hormuz. With tensions escalating in the region, supply disruptions have started affecting the hospitality sector, which relies heavily on commercial LPG cylinders for daily cooking operations.
Restaurant associations in cities like Mumbai and Chennai have warned that many establishments may shut down if the situation continues. Some eateries have already reduced menu items and operating hours to conserve remaining gas supplies, while others have resorted to traditional firewood stoves to keep kitchens running.
In response to the crisis, the central government has prioritised LPG supplies for households and essential services such as hospitals and educational institutions. Refineries have been instructed to increase LPG production, and a committee has been formed to review supply requests from industries including hotels and restaurants. However, restaurant associations say commercial LPG supply on the ground remains severely disrupted.
