New Delhi: Every year on March 8, people around the world celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) to recognise the achievements and contributions of women in various fields and to promote gender equality.
The day highlights the vital role women play in shaping societies and driving progress in social, economic, cultural and political spheres. It also serves as an opportunity to reflect on the challenges women still face and encourages efforts to create equal opportunities and rights for women everywhere.
The theme for International Women’s Day 2026 is “Give to Gain.” The theme emphasises the importance of supporting women’s development, leadership and empowerment.
The campaign encourages individuals, organisations and governments to invest in women’s progress and opportunities. It promotes the idea that when societies uplift women, the benefits extend to families, communities and economies as a whole.
By fostering a culture of generosity, support and collaboration, the theme calls for collective action to help women achieve their full potential.
International Women’s Day has a history that dates back more than a century. The movement began in the early 1900s during a time when women across the world were fighting for better working conditions, fair wages and voting rights.
One of the earliest demonstrations took place in 1908, when women textile workers in New York protested for improved labour rights, shorter working hours and the right to vote.
The first official celebrations of International Women’s Day were held in 1911 in several countries, including the United States and parts of Europe. Over time, the observance spread worldwide as a symbol of the struggle for women’s rights and equality.
In 1975, the United Nations officially recognised March 8 as International Women’s Day. Since then, the day has become a global event marked by campaigns, discussions, and initiatives aimed at promoting gender equality.
Today, International Women’s Day continues to inspire action toward building a fairer and more inclusive world where women have equal opportunities to succeed and lead.
