India’s dependence on Russian crude oil has surged sharply in March as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East disrupt global energy flows. According to ship-tracking data, India’s imports of Russian oil have risen to around1.5 million barrels per day, marking an increase of nearly50% compared to February’s 1.04 million barrels per day.
The shift comes as military tensions in the region threaten shipping through theStrait of Hormuz, a critical global oil transit route that handles a significant share of India’s crude imports from Gulf nations such as Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and the UAE. Disruptions along this corridor have forced Indian refiners to seek alternative supplies to avoid shortages and price spikes.
India, the world’sthird-largest crude oil importer, consumes roughly5.8 million barrels of oil per day, with about88% of its demand met through imports. With Middle Eastern shipments facing delays and uncertainty, Russia has emerged as a key supplier to stabilize the country’s energy needs.
Energy analysts say the diversification of supply sources has helped India offset some of the potential losses caused by disrupted Gulf shipments. However, experts warn thatLPG supplies remain vulnerable, as a large portion of India’s cooking gas imports still comes from the Middle East and passes through the same chokepoint.
The surge in Russian oil purchases highlights how geopolitical conflicts can rapidly reshape global energy trade flows and force major economies like India to adjust their sourcing strategies.
