The Indian government has asked major airlines, including IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet and Akasa, to submit data on average airfares, as antitrust authorities investigate the severe travel disruptions witnessed in December, according to official documents.
IndiGo, which controls around 65% of India’s aviation market, cancelled nearly 4,500 flights last month due to pilot shortages. The cancellations stranded thousands of passengers and caused widespread disruption across the country.
During the crisis, airfares on certain routes surged sharply, prompting the government to impose temporary fare caps. In December, India’s competition watchdog, the Competition Commission of India (CCI), said it had initiated proceedings against IndiGo to examine whether the airline abused its dominant market position. IndiGo has not commented on the matter.
India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has written to airlines seeking average fare details for each route operated between December 1 and 15. The data request covers both economy and premium economy tickets, according to a Reuters review of a January 1 government email sent to IndiGo, Air India, Air India Express, SpiceJet and Akasa.
Neither the CCI nor the DGCA responded to Reuters’ queries regarding the private communication. Akasa declined to comment, while the other airlines did not respond.
A government source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the data was requested at the CCI’s behest to help assess airfare trends across airlines during the period of disruption. The email also asked carriers to share fare information for routes specifically affected by the cancellations.
There is no indication at this stage that the investigation is being expanded to include other airlines. One complaint under review by the CCI alleges that IndiGo cancelled flights and subsequently offered seats at significantly higher prices, potentially constituting an abuse of its dominant market position, Reuters has previously reported.
