Indian Railways Announces Reservation for Agniveers and Ex-Servicemen in Recruitment

Indian Railways has introduced a major employment initiative offering reservation benefits to Agniveers and retired armed forces personnel. Under a newly signed “Framework of Cooperation” between Indian Railways and the Indian Army, eligible candidates will receive 10% to 20% reservation across various recruitment levels, including more than 5,000 upcoming Pointsman posts.

In a significant move aimed at supporting Agniveers and former armed forces personnel, Indian Railways has announced reservation benefits in its recruitment process. The decision follows a formal agreement between Indian Railways and the Indian Army under a “Framework of Cooperation,” designed to facilitate structured re-employment opportunities for retiring Agniveers and ex-servicemen.

As per the new policy, reservation will be provided across Level 1, Level 2, and higher-level posts in railway recruitment. For Level 1 positions, 20% reservation has been allocated for ex-servicemen and 10% for retired Agniveers. For Level 2 and above posts, ex-servicemen will receive 10% reservation, while retired Agniveers will be eligible for 5% reservation.

Indian Railways is expected to soon recruit more than 5,000 Pointsman positions, and these posts will prioritize retired Agniveers and former defence personnel. These appointments are likely to be on a contractual basis.

Nine railway zones have reportedly entered into agreements with the Indian Army to operationalize this initiative. The move comes at a crucial time, as the first batch of Agniveers recruited under the Agnipath Scheme (launched in 2022) is set to complete its four-year tenure later this year.

The Agnipath Scheme allows young recruits to serve in the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force for four years. As these personnel transition out of active service, both central and state departments have been introducing measures to integrate them into civilian employment. The Railways’ latest decision is being viewed as part of a broader national effort to provide structured career pathways for trained defence personnel.
