India has successfully used artificial intelligence-based prediction tools to anticipate and prevent a major Chinese military action along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Arunachal Pradesh, according to Lt Gen Dinesh Singh Rana. Speaking at the India AI Impact Summit 2026, he revealed that a locally developed, low-cost AI system detected early warning signs of unusual military activity by China.
The AI system helped Indian forces predict the timing of the Chinese move, allowing timely deployment and evacuation planning, which resulted in zero casualties on the Indian side. He described the Chinese action as unprecedented and highlighted the critical role AI played in strengthening national security.
Lt Gen Rana also emphasised that AI is reshaping modern warfare globally, with major powers like United States and China investing heavily in AI-driven defence technologies. These include autonomous weapons, cyber defence, surveillance, logistics, and precision targeting.
He warned about the risks of artificial superintelligence and its potential misuse by hostile actors. He urged India to develop a comprehensive AI security doctrine and adopt scalable, cost-effective AI technologies such as autonomous drones to enhance military readiness.
He concluded that as India aims to become a global superpower, it must also become a responsible AI power, ensuring advanced AI technologies are used safely and strategically.
